The Daily Run

The New Balance SC Elite V4 after 25km!

Haha, I agree, thats not a lot of kilometres. But it feels like a mini milestone, so let’s run with it. No pun intended.

  • 8.8km total
  • 8.25km run
  • 47:11 minutes for the 8.25km
  • 5:42 minute pace for the run leg
  • New Balance SC Elite V4

So today was a great run. Im not sure what I really set out to achieve today. I think it was slated as an “easy 5-7km” day.

But I felt like popping on the SC Elite V4’s and just seeing what happened. I think mostly, I was just looking to see if I could hold a steady, not too fast pace, in a shoe that really wants to go faster.

And I have to say, it was a ripping success!

My 1km splits were:

  • 6:02
  • 5:50
  • 5:51
  • 5:42
  • 5:41
  • 5:36
  • 5:41
  • 5:25

Really happy to see that consistency in a long-ish run. Im often up and down and all over the place, but I really focused on trying to maintain my form, maintain the same stride and cadence, and not exert myself too much. I was going for a longer run, at a smooth pace, not a fast run.

The shoes felt fantastic.

Ive always been weary with carbon plated shoes. I had an original Nike Vaporfly that I got super cheap once. That shoe was so narrow, it gave me hell in my arch. Amazing feeling underfoot, but I rarely ran in them. More recently, I had the Endorphin Pro 3. Which was a fantastic feeling shoe, but without fail, my foot was sore for a number of days afterwards. So again, it only made it out every couple of weeks at best.

The New Balance SC Elite V4 is being reviewed online as a super shoe thats a bit more accomodating to the every day runner. And id have to agree.

It doesn’t have an aggressive angle to it. It’s not so narrow you think you’re going to break an ankle. It really does feel solid under foot.

Today was the first time ive felt like ive been in control of the SC Elite V4, rather than it dictating pace and bounce. It could be that the midsole does just take a little to break in. And after 25km I would say the show is definitely getting better and better with each run. Albeit, a small sample size.

I would NOT recommend this shoe for walking. I find that the walking portion of my runs with these shoes, I get an extremely stiff Achilles / calf area on at least one leg. Like the stiffness in the shoe from the plate just doesn’t allow me to work normally. But so far on the runs, ive not had any issues underfoot, or post race, to any degree worth mentioning.

Im still not 100% sure how id go wearing this for a marathon (lets face it, I cant run a marathon so this is a pointless take), it may start to feel a bit firm under foot after a while. But im going to try and push this shoe, hopefully into that mid teens range (12-16km). If I can get my body that far.

All in all, super happy with todays run, and most definitely, with the New Balance SC Elite V4.
